Adventures of a Wanderer

Last fall, unhindered for the first time in my life, I made the most of my days. I tried to get out at least once a week for an adventure, and at long last did an overnight solo adventure. I revisited all my favorite places; how had a year gone by since I had last seen them. I also discovered some hidden gems.

Then last November happened. My mom collapsed from an aortic dissection, had emergency surgery and spent a month in the hospital and rehab. When I was in the midst of it, I was sure that I would never be able return to my adventurous life.

Eventually though, the fog cleared and everything returned to a new normal.

One good thing that came out of that time was the conversations I had with my dad as I drove him back and forth to the hospital to visit mom. After the initial recounting of details of how it all happened, we settled into conversations about his growing up years, and about his parents and grandparents. I had always known that my great-grandparents had lived a lot of places, but I didn't know that it was all my great-grandpa's idea. He would start a business, run it for a few years and then sell it, move someplace else, and start a new business, repeating the cycle over and over again. He even earned the nickname "the German gypsy". This was a glimpse into my soul.

Spring is here. I am still mostly unhindered, except for the cell phone that is always tucked into a pocket. Let's go explore some of my favorite places...

I hope that everyone has a joy-filled Easter next week. I will see you in a couple of weeks.

Sarah, this was just delightful! I enjoyed your film very much. It had a nice variety from wide take-it-all-in shots to details like the shadows of weeds moving in the wind. So much fun.....thanks for taking us along on your adventure day!

I couldn't help but see this as a narrative arc. The music ramped up perfectly in time with what I saw as the climax - the lighthouse. What a gorgeous little story! If I had to pick a theme, I'd say it was pure gratitude for the beauty in all your favorite places.

It was wonderful tagging along to your favorite adventure spots! Your video is so well done; perfect images and music! Life may slow us down at times and not allow us the freedom of adventuring, but then things smooth out and we can return to what we love and what brings us joy!

So glad you had the chance for conversations with your dad. And glad your mom is doing better. I look forward to seeing more of your adventures, now that spring has finally arrived.

I love the movie about your adventures, and the music fits it so well.
I had to laugh about the "German gypsy"... it's a gift on its own (despite the sad circumstances) that you had all these conversations with your dad. I remember having those with both my mom and my dad when they were still alive. I've written down a lot of it, so that my daughter one day can read them as well. This is priceless...

What a terrible but nice time for you and your dad to be able to talk like that. Isn't there an old Van Morrison song about a Gypsy Soul?

I would see the time with your Dad as an adventure that was truly a gift. Have you thought about filming him?
