5 Random Friday Finds

Find No. 1

The first outdoor Antique Market of the year was this past Sunday. I love wandering the aisles, looking for treasures. I found this Miss America Depression era glass compote dish at one of the booths. No price on it, always my luck. I asked the guy at the checkout table, who was busily eating his Elephant Ear at eleven o'clock in the morning, how much? He pondered a moment and said how about $6. Sold. I knew Mallory would love it for her dessert/food photography. Doing some research on-line Sunday night, I see they are normally sold for $25. I think I did good.

I also found this petite size book of hymns for five dollars. I want to use bits and pieces in my double exposure photography. Fellow Instagrammers keep watch.

Find No. 3

I also found this Beatles era costume. Glen and I have a 50's-60's rock and roll themed fundraiser to go to next week, this would be just perfect for him. Glen didn't think the cut of the suit would work for him, hence probably a little too tight.

Driving home from the Antique Market, I stopped at this little park next to a train trestle. I have driven by this train trestle hundreds of times, but never stopped, this is the year to do things differently.

I found my favorite yearly magazine on the newsstand this week. This weekend while we are at college graduation, I will be pouring over the pages and planning my next adventure.

This will be my last Random Friday Finds until June. I am taking the rest of May off to enjoy time with my family.

Find No. 1

I am taking Vivienne McMaster's Double Exposure Love class this week. I found I am in creative heaven at the moment. Something fun and different to learn. Mainly we are using the Diana Photo App which is available for iPhone and Android. This photo is actually triple exposed.

The base layer is this photo, taken at Lake Leelanau:

Then this texture of a wooden door at the Northern Michigan Asylum in Traverse City is exposed over top of it:

I then added one of the filters  in the Diana App and saved it:

Which is quite pretty just by itself, but then I brought that back into Diana as the base layer and  added this photo of my daughter, Mallory sitting on the rocks at Presque Isle Park in Marquette, over top of the base layer:

I added another filter and saved it, which gave me the finished creation of the first image.

I am still working on my #the100daysproject #100daysofleadinglines on Instagram. This is my favorite so far this week.

Find No. 3

I found a new collar waiting for Scout on the front step the other day, sent with love from Mallory.

Find No. 4

I have found texting to be so handy for many things including sending your daughter a recipe for a snack bread that she wants to make while she is away at school. The beauty of technology, it does have its pluses.

I found an unused railroad track next to the cemetery, which will be ideal for doing some self-portraiture work, definitely won't be any gawkers there.

I found beautiful diffused light and the perfect quote:

Courage doesn't always roar.
Sometimes courage is the quiet voice
at the end of the day saying
"I will try again tomorrow."

Find No. 1

On Monday I started a new photography project, The 100 Day Project. Of course I also only found the project on Monday, so I had to make a decision quickly about what my project was going to be. I thought about what I like to take photos of, narrowing it down as I went. Then I came up with it - paths. I love paths and now that the snow is gone I can actually see the path. Two days into the project, I realized that I hadn't narrowed it down quite far enough. While I love paths, what I am really drawn to are the leading lines. So...slight modification...the project is now officially established as 100 days of leading lines, or #100daysofleadinglines if you want to follow my project on Instagram.

Last Friday I took my vintage binoculars I got last fall, out for a photo shoot. I love how this one turned out.

The path I could have chosen for my 100 day project.

Self-portrait of the week. I rarely do black and white work, but I thought the contrast in this one was quite lovely, so worth a try. I used the front facing camera on this and am pleased how it turned out, sometimes the quality is quite questionable. It is amazing what better eye contact you have when you look at the camera lens as opposed to the viewing screen. *Hint the camera lens is located ABOVE the viewing screen :) If you are curious about why I have fallen in love with self-portrait work come back here on Sunday to read the story.

I found this amazing tree reflection in the water on Monday when I was out on a photo walk with a friend.

So many fun processing options with this shot as well. I may have had a little too much fun with that.

5 Random Friday Finds

Find No. 1

I found beautiful early morning light on our walk downtown this week.

Find No. 2

I found a great place to kick up the Paisleys and enjoy the sunshine and 50 degree temperatures. Go away snow! I could have easily taken a nap here.

Find No. 3

I found a lovely little stream while trudging through the snow around a frozen pond. Always the adventurous one am I.

Find No. 4

Thanks to my friend Viv, I found the perfect online journaling app for all my Apple devices, Day One.

Find No. 5

I found this one beautiful fading bloom in the boutique of yellow roses that my dad bought for my daughter while she was home on Spring Break. I loved the way the petals lay open around the center. I paired this bloom with a pair of vintage gloves I found in an antique shop last week, watch for these in future self-portraiture work. I also added an old vintage envelope I had in my ephemera stash. I don't do this kind of still life often but these pieces called to me to be paired together.

5 Random Friday Finds

I am taking Vivienne McMaster's Be Your Own Beloved self-portraiture class right now. This class is just the spark of creativity I needed this week. Faced with day after day of snow and cold, I needed something to make me pick up my camera. Each day we get a prompt to somehow include ourselves in the photo. Thursday's prompt was a photo walk around our neighborhood and include our hand in the shot to showcase things we found on our photo walk.

Did I mention earlier the snow and the cold...

Was she serious a photo walk...how was I going to do that? It was frigid outside and there is two plus feet of snow in my backyard. But...if you know me at all by now, you know that I refuse to be beaten. So I put on my big girl snow pants and went outside.

Find No. 1

The first thing I found was the light right outside my side garage door covered with a dusting of snow and some lovely frost on the panes of glass.

Find No. 2

Next I found the pine cone my daughter had put out last year covered with peanut butter and birdseed. The peanut butter and birdseed are long gone, but the pine cone remains.

Find No. 3

I found rhododendron buds on my bush waiting for spring.

Find No. 4

I made a path to the wood pile.

The wood pile made me happy and so worth wading through the snow.

Find No. 5

Then I waded across the backyard to the compost bins.

It was cold and it was snowy, but you know what it was also a lot of fun, and I proved to myself that I don't have to let the weather stop me.

My reward for completing my photo walk...

I got to snow blow the driveway.

The downfall of glasses. After this I claimed my reward of a nice chai latte.

I hope everybody is staying warm out there.
