Every Girl Needs an Anthem

Every Sunday there is a blog link up party hosted by Kathy at You'll Shoot Your Eye Out. The party is called Song-ography, an interpretation of the words of the featured weekly song incorporated into your photography. I do not participate in this party, not because I don't want to, but because I know my scheduled blogging party limitations.

A few of my friends do participate in this link up, so I get to read their lovely words and see their interpretation of the song. This week as I was reading my friend Nancy's post, something stirred inside me. I was moved by her words. I was also moved by the song. The song is Brave by Sara Bareilles.

First of all, she has a great name even if she is missing the "h". Second of all, I have heard the song before. First exposure coming from watching The Voice (one of my favorite TV shows). I have been exposed to a lot of new music by watching that show, hopefully that will help keep me hip for years to come. Having heard this song on the show before, I knew that I liked it, but obviously not enough to pursue looking up the artist on iTunes or downloading the album. That is until I read Nancy's post and really listened to the words.

BRAVE

"You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be an outcast
Or be the backlash or somebody's lack of love
Or you can start speaking up
Nothing's gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle 'neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins
But I wonder what would happen if you

Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave…"

You can read the rest of the lyrics here.

My word for 2014 is Courageous. I debated back and forth between Courageous and Brave. So I feel the perfect sidecar word to Courageous is Brave. Courageous is acting and Brave is a feeling inside. I want to feel Brave in my writing, in my photography, in everything that I do. So this song is going to be my Anthem for 2014.

Do you have a song that could be your Anthem? I would love to hear what it is.

What a nice post....and thanks for the link back to Nancy's post. I have met Nancy and we keep talking about getting together but so far haven't...maybe this is the year for that too!!

This song is my anthem for this year, too, though I hadn't thought of it in those terms. I'm keeping my word of the year to myself for a while, but "Brave" complements it and I hear the song running through my head all the time.

If that's the same song that Pink sings, YES, but somehow the words don't quite sound the same. But then I don't even think I know them but the chorus part. LOL

I love this shot, it is as if those Christmas balls were put there just for your photo. What powerful lyrics, I am so often awed by the depth of understanding and the ability of the young to express themselves so beautifully...I shall look for more of Sara's work, thanks for sharing her name here.

Add my name to the list that has this song as an anthem this year. What a coincidence, then again maybe not, we do seem to enjoy the same things. I've already downloaded her song and it plays through my mind everyday. I'm trying to memorize the words so I can sing it when needed. I caught myself walking through the woods yesterday singing, repeatedly and rather loudly 'I wanna see you be brave." I probably scared a few birds away!!

Sarah, this really gets me thinking! But how to choose one song? There is a program which I follow via podcast called Desert Island Discs. It's been on the BBC for decades, since the 1940s or 50s. Guests are asked to choose 10 songs (I think it's ten, maybe 8?) that are meaningful to them, then they have to choose the one that they'd bring on a desert island. Anyway, it's always fantastic! You can listen back through the archives, too.

There are too many songs I love…classical pieces? Sultans of Swing? Year of the Cat because it was my first slow dance?

love this reflection, the ornament looks immense in this photo!
before I decided not to choose 'one word' for this year, I had considered gratitude, which actually I'm writing my daily gratitude on pieces of paper and placing them in a jar which sits on my table where I pray morning and night.
