The Year Ahead

The older I get the more I approach the start of each new year with a fair amount of trepidation. More and more of life lies behind me. Also as I get older so does everyone else; parents, spouse, daughter, dog. Some still in the prime of their lives, others not so much. Yes, this does concern me. My dad will be 80 in February, which in this day and age isn't that old, but still you never know. I can't imagine life without my dad. I have a project that I want to work on with him this year. I want to make videos of him sharing his history with me. Recording this for me, for my daughter and for my future grandchildren. My dad is a collector of stuff, really cool old stuff. Stuff full of family history. I want the stories of those things and I want the stories in his voice.

After losing one dog this past year I don't want to go through that again any time soon. Yet Scout will be 12 in just a few days. While still full of naughtiness for his age, he also harbors some less than wonderful hips. On his good days we will go out and explore to our hearts content. On the less than stellar days I will make him comfortable with a warm blanket on his dog bed, while I write and process pictures and video from our adventures.

Despite some trepidation, I also approach 2015 with great excitement because many wonderful things  lie ahead.

The first of which being the graduation of the beautiful girl from college on the first Saturday of May. The first of our family to graduate with a four year degree. She is changing the blood line, a phrase she has grown to detest yet tolerate. But it is true, she is changing the blood line and we are extremely proud of her!

In celebration of her graduation we are taking a family vacation to Walt Disney World a little later in May. We haven't been in a number of years but it is one of our favorite vacation destinations. Glen and Mallory love the rides, I love the people watching. I should come back with some great stories.

At some point in the year we will help the beautiful girl move somewhere to begin life beyond college. She has no idea where that will be or what she will be doing. But I have complete faith that what ever and where ever it is, it will be an amazing adventure.

Another highlight in the year ahead will be meeting up with a dear blogging friend for a week vacation in Pennsylvania. We have been friends for a couple of years and have walked through some hard times together. Yet we have never met in person. This year we will change that. We will have a week to hike together, to photograph together, to go antiquing and to go to coffee shops. A week to talk, to laugh and to cement a life long friendship.

Finally, I haven't been around this space much lately but I have been busy. I have been working hard on my new project: A Year Beside The Water. The sight is live and the first post is up. I would love it if you would click on over and check it out. This will be where I will be spending most of my time in 2015. I am so excited to see where this project takes me and to document the creative growth that lies ahead.

I am also excited to see where 2015 will take you my friends. I would love to hear a plan or two that you have in the works for the year ahead.

Your project with your Dad is going to be amazing! My Grandad recorded hours upon hours with the London Museum on his life, his memories, the places in the London Docks, and I was gifted copies of these when he died, along with inheriting all his research. Unfortunately I do not have him to ask questions to anymore, so enjoy every precious moment of this adventure you will be going on! I am going to pop over now to your new project and will add it to my blog roll so I don't miss out. Have a very Happy New Year xx

You say what I think in regards to most of the years behind you-me too! I'm gonna tell you why I think that's a brilliant idea. My dad played the piano like nobody's business. For years and years and years I begged my dad to record his songs for me-he never did-snd now it's to late with alzheimers robbing me and him. So use me to plea-maybe your dad is more open and willing. But man... I hope he agrees. Good on Mallory. I can see when you write about her-how pride oozes from the screen. I think that's beautiful. I've not made plans yet-but in they're in my brain-getting sorted out! Happy New Year my friend. Beautiful post. Xo

It has been been a highlight of my 2014 to meet up and follow along with you on your photo journeys and coffee shop stops. You are truly blessed to have both parents and are absolutely right to never take that for granted. I wish I would have recorded my mom and the stories of her life - though I did put together a cookbook of her home recipes with accompanying stories shortly after she died - sending copies to my siblings. Looking forward to visiting your new site.

Happy New Years Sarah!

Happy New Year, Sarah! You have such a wonderful new year to look forward to; recording your dad, graduation, being there for Mallory as she settle into her post-school life! I haven't begun my thinking about 2015. I usually wait until the first few weeks in January. I spent December enjoying the holidays! I'm looking forward to your new blog. Hopping over there as soon as this is posted!

How well I know the trepidation of agin parents and animals. My mom turns 86 on the 18th and we have 2 cats turning 15 this year. I'm trying to embrace every day with them as I know that someday they will be gone.
The graduation sounds exciting and the trip to Disneyland fun.
I'll check out your new blog, it sounds exciting.
Happy New Year.

A wonderful post with many of the same thoughts I've been working through. But let me tell you, act now on your project with you dad - as you stated, "you never know". I've lost both of my parents & have many things I wished I would/could/should have done, but I am left with memories of many other great things. Here's to a GREAT & GRAND New Year!

Oh this sounds like a wonderful year to have planned. It is such a great idea to record your father's memories. Where will you be in PA?

Happy New Year! Your idea to record your dad is wonderful. I can remember listening to my grandfather tell his stories, I wish we had a recording now. Good for Mallory!! My nephew will also be graduating from college soon, it makes me feel old. :) I have been thinking about my one word for the year, haven't pinned down just one yet. I do know I want to take more pictures and learn more about photography. Your year sounds like busy fun!

Sarah, What a well thought out post. Your words spoke directly to my heart today. I've been kind of missing in action with regard to blogging, and my reasons could come straight from your blog. I help to care for my mother who is 80 and is in the beginning stages of dementia - and our youngest son will be graduating from high school and off to college this year. Like you, I don't want to take one minute for granted, and so I will be letting go of some of online classes and activities, but I will surely try to keep up with your new adventures by the water. I wish you a wonderful year!
