Scene & Story - November 2017

This photograph is what I have come to think of as "my style". If you look at my Instagram you will see that my feed is full of this type of look this fall; muted browns and grays, leaning towards the warm side of life, a bit painterly, and usually including leading lines of some sort.

Usually this type of shot is taken with my iPhone and processed with my own customized filter in the app. Stackables. But this shot was taken with my Canon 6D and my Lensbaby Velvet 56 lens. Knowing my "style" so fully now, it was fairly easy for me to recreate "the look" in Lightroom with a Preset, a graduated filter and some burning with the brush tool. The SOOC shot is below:

Even though this is probably a fairly true version of how the scene actually looked, in hindsight I should have stopped down a stop to maybe -1, but even at that, the top photography is how the scene felt to me, and how I wanted to share it with you.

Monday afternoon I was able to escape for a little while, to get back to what I love and keeps me sane...photography.

**JUST A NOTE: This is the second to last Scene & Story. Leon and I committed to one full year, so with the posting on January 7, 2018 of December's favorite photo, that will conclude the year. We have loved hosting this link up, and hope some of you will continue the practice on your own, but we are also ready to embrace 2018 and try some new things.

Thanks for hosting Scene & Story - I am going to miss it! I love the leading lines in your photo and always seem to love photos of paths. I suspect it tells me something about my own life. I'd like to jump into your photo and explore the different directions. I also love that you share your process - I need to check out the app you mention. I'm always looking new things, but there is so much out there. It's helpful to know what other people use and like.

I love that your photos are warm and rich in color. I agree with you that photos don't have to always be the way we see them. They are better when we show the way we felt them. I'm going to miss our group here at Scene & Story. I've enjoyed the year with you and Lee. Thank you for hosting

Wow, Sarah, this was really interesting. Of course I know you have a style - it's a very distinctive one. But I hadn't realized how much you "develop" your images in post-processing to achieve that style. Your before-and-after is inspiring! I loved seeing how you felt, as compared to just what the camera saw. Thought-provoking!

Amazing how two views can give different feelings .,...
Loved your thoughts of, “ . . . leaning towards the warm side of life, a bit painterly . . . “

1. I googled SOOC. :) 2. I was stunned by how much changed between the versions of your photo. 3. Scene and Story has been so much fun for me. I am truly grateful for this year of check-ins and the community of people you've pulled together who just delight in sharing photography. Thank you!

Love the autumnal mood in this photo, Sarah. I think it is rare that a shot comes SOOC looking the way we would like it. Tweaking almost always improves the image, IMO. :)

What a gorgeous photo. I love the lines that pull you into the scene. The richness of the colors after your processing a warm and inviting. Thanks for hosting Scene & Story giving us a chance to look back and review our photographs from the month and reflecting.

It is amazing how you processed the photo. I like the warm light and the overall mood of the scene. A beautiful autumn scene with a touch of melancholy.

It's always interesting to hear how people achieve the look they desire. Two very lovely images, Sarah with a different mood.
I am late joining Scene and Story this month as I have been away for a few days.
I shall really miss our monthly postings here and thank you for creating this space for us all which I have enjoyed so much.

Those are my favourite colours, guess it makes sense seeing as I was born in our Autumn.

It's great to see your before and after and how others like to edit. I forgot about scene and story so will have to try and post tomorrow or the next day! I'm sorry it will end, but a year's project is long enough I'd agree.
